Critical phenomenology and psychiatry

Abstract Whereas classical Critical Theory has tended to view phenomenology as inherently uncritical, the recent upsurge of what become known critical attempted show that phenomenological concepts and methods can be used in analyses social political issues. A landmark publication, 50 Concepts for Phenomenology , contains no reference psychiatry psychopathology, however. This is an unfortunate omission, since tradition psychiatry—as we will demonstrate present article by surveying discussing contribution Jaspers, Minkowski, Laing, Basaglia, Fanon—from outset practiced thinking, it at theoretical, interpersonal, institutional, or level. Fanon today a recognized figure phenomenology, even if his role might not yet have been appreciated thoroughly anticolonial antiracist contributions. But show, he part long history approaches psychopathology psychiatry, which firm roots tradition, keeps up its work today.
